In early 2006, Google announced a new product called the "Google Pack". The Google Pack is essentially a selection of more than 10 packages of free software, including free anti spyware and anti virus software. In the Centre of Google Pack there is a Setup program that simplifies the task to manage and maintain all developed software updated.
To start with Google offered 2 good anti virus and anti spyware programs. The anti virus software Norton Anti Virus 2005 Symantec - not the latest version of the product but a virus solution was more competent ant. The major limitation with this product that was only 6 months of free virus definitions were provided after this point the user needed to upgrade.
The anti spyware software provided by Lavasoft. The product was called "Ad-Aware SE", which was already freely available on the popular download sites such as CNet's Download.com. Spyware detection capabilities were good, but in no case the best. You must also manually remember to update the definitions of spyware and launch analyses.
In the spring of 2007, Google has replaced the spyware and anti free software virus offered by Google Pack. The software anti virus was always provided by Symantec however Norton Anti Virus 2005 has been replaced by a special edition of Norton Security Scan scans and also removes virus threats. The product is based on the award-winning Norton AntiVirus products. More important still Norton Security Scanner provides free updates and is not limited to 6 months only.
Google has also replaced the software anti spyware with Spyware Doctor Starter Edition. Spyware Doctor has consistently scores very strongly this test more magazine and is usually fighting with Spyware Sweeper from Webroot for 1st or 2nd place. While the Starter Edition is not some of the functions of active prevention of spyware in the full version, it still retain powerful analysis and detection capabilities. With Norton Security Scan definitions are free and automatic for life.
